All that said, if you’re looking for something that oozes style, doesn’t linger too terribly long, and is unique without question this is an interesting option to have available. It’s difficult to review a game this abstract and this artistically focused with any certainty. Perhaps I’m just the wrong target audience, and loads of other people will find a deeper meaning that I missed entirely within Genesis Noir. Between concepts that don’t translate well into gameplay, controls and execution that can be spotty, and simple actions that aren’t well-suited to the use of a controller it isn’t all positives. Underneath the gorgeous animation and the wonderful jazz music is a journey that lacks substance. Now, when you’re actually looking to “play” and not just enjoy or consume the experience? Yeah, that’s a bit hit or miss at best much of the time. The game’s title says it all: here is the story of the world’s beginnings as told. While its art style may be a bit minimalist, that doesn’t make its imagery any less fascinating, and when you pair that with its pretty sweet jazz-heavy soundtrack it really comes together quite nicely. 9 Genesis Noir, the ultimate whodunnit (and its subordinate mystery: howdunnit) is the origin of our universe. ![]() Genesis Noir really capitalizes on that notion, and while in terms of gameplay things are much more inconsistent and iffy it absolutely delivers a unique vision. But it took a while for me to reach this conclusion about Genesis Noir ’s redeeming qualities. New indie art game Genesis Noir surmises that, to prevent a single death, one must first know life, its origin and devastating, insistent fate. Moments of Greatness Despite my obvious complaints and reservations about how Genesis Noir feels like a broken promise from the exceptional demo offered last year, I didn’t dislike the game. While it is a visual and aural feast, dripping with style, mechanically as a game it unfortunately strugglesĮspecially with indies there’s a somewhat unique opportunity to take chances and do things that are unexpected. Published Genesis Noir is a gorgeous, ambitious adventure that blends jazz with cosmology, but its interactive qualities don't compare with its narrative scope. ![]()
